Word of mouth: The best free publicity.
With all the news about the Revolution Wii going about now, everyone's wondering why Nintendo used that name.

Well, God Mode may have just hit the nail on the head as to why.

Think about it: Nintendo just changes the name a bit before E3. A press release and a quick change on the website and they don't really make a big deal about it and... they just sit back and watch. Why?

Because with just three letters, the REST OF THE PLANET IS NOW TALKING ABOUT IT FOR THEM. Why do a big assed campaign that'll cost millions when the millions on the Internet will talk about it for you, and on their own dime? That was Nintendo's strategy with the change: Cause some controversy and let the gamers take care of the rest. That way there's a massive talk about/media thing about the new system right before E3, it's probably all but guaranteed a big audience for the Nintendo press conference there, and it's cost was so insignificant it's almost laughable. (Thus saving more cash for the launch date.)

And we bought it all, blindly, quickly, and without thinking.

So welcome to Nintendo's REAL Revolution. Where we've just all been used as fuel for the world's biggest publicity machine.

... Wii.

So "Wii" is sort of the gamer's equivalent of "Snakes on a Plane"? Give it the right title and the publicity will take care of itself?

Basically, yes. Take "Snakes on a Plane"; I have heard about it, seen screen shots and such, and a multitude of other things. But almost all of it has been via the regular Internet. I haven't seen one commercial on TV, nor have I been to the official site, but I know enough about the movie already just because of people talking about it.

Rumors and gossip are usually faster than normal forms of publicity for disseminating information. (That probably another reason why Nintendo did it.)

:P And I still won't buy one until the Wii is dirt cheap.
